The goaltending depth for Poland looks to be getting stronger. We reported back in May that it was likely Tomáš Fučík would be applying for Polish citizenship. This came after he married former Stoczniowiec Gdansk player Aneta Błaszak, winner of three PLHK silver medals. According to Hokej.net, Fučík has now submitted the proper documentation, and his citizenship is only pending a review. The PZHL are said to be involved in helping speed up the process.

The 29-year-old goalie is in his third stint in Poland. From 2016 to 2018, he played with JKH GKS Jastrzebie. During his time in Jastzebie, he showed he was a top goalie with 1.99 GAA and .939 SV% in 2018. He left to play in the top level of Slovakian hockey before returning to Poland with Lotos PKH Gdansk in 2020. The 6’2 netminder would play in the Chance Liga the following two years before returning with GKS Tychy halfway through the 2022 season. He remains with Tychy today. He has never posted a save percentage below .932 in his five full seasons in Poland.

His consistency should give Poland another great depth option. If granted citizenship, he is expected to debut with Poland during December national team matches. Current national team goalie John Murray, a fellow import, turned 36 this past July. It makes sense that Poland wants to start looking towards the future, especially with what is at stake with Poland’s return to the Elite Division of the Men’s World Championship. Outside of Murray, Poland brought David Zabolotny and Maciej Miarka to last year’s event. Miarka got the start and won against Romania to send Poland to the Elite division. Kamil Lewartowski showed well in some non-IIHF matches, and Michał Kieler also remains an option. The position group has prospects, but many are still too young to take on national team action. At 29 years old and consistent, Fučík could be a great stop gate for Poland in the net.
