The World Juniors are a wonderful time in hockey. The hockey is always great and it is also chance to see future stars of the national team. This year Poland has quite the big name on their roster with Alan Lyszczarczyk leading the team this year. Lyszczarczyk is the biggest name in Polish hockey since Oliwa or Czerkawski. Also in the tournament is Samuel Duggan playing for Great Britain. Both him and Lyszczarczyk went undrafted last year, which was a bit of a shock for many fans. We won’t see Duggan vs Lyszczarczyk til Day Three though so let’s look back at Day One.
Ukraine at Poland.
Poland’s offense would flex their muscles in their first game-winning 4-2. In total Poland put up 42 shots on net. Wrobel would get the opening goal late in the first period. Lyszczarczyk would add to lead in the second. Ukraine would score twice in third after Kovalenko and Svishev find the back of the net, but Poland would also get two with goals from Pas and Jeziorski. Pas was the leading scorers at last year’s u18s with 10 goals in 5 games. Now has 11 IIHF goals in 6 games and has not scored in an IIHF game. Lyszczarczyk has also never been held pointless in an IIHF game with his goal and assist today. Offensive defenseman Tomasz Skokan joined them with his assist today. In net Studzinski was solid stopping 25 out of 27 shots against him. Poland plays tomorrow vs Slovenia.
Game 2. Hungary at Italy. A huge second period would give Hungary all they need as they put up four goals in the period. Final score 5-2 Hungary wins.
Game 3. Slovenia at Great Britain. Slovenia had a huge advantage in shots through 2 with the total being 27-9. They would only have a one-goal lead though. In the third, Great Britain would make a comeback with power-play goals from Duggan and Pound. Slovenia would make their own comeback though, scoring with six minutes left. The game would go to overtime, where Tomazevic would win for Slovenia.
