Day 4 Recap. Poland stays Undefeated. Great Britain Finishes Strong

Day 4 of the WJC Division 1 B. Well the tournament is coming to a close with only one day left after this. Today was a huge day as everyone made a final push for the gold. Today’s action featured Great Britain vs Ukraine and Poland vs Slovenia.

First game Great Britain vs Ukraine. Great Britain comes into this game trying to clinch a medal. On the power play, Ukrainian forward Vorona would open the scoring with the only goal of the first. Stratford ties it up for Great Britain in the second. In the third, Great Britain would score twice in the first ten minutes with goals from Speirs and Heywood. Six minutes left Radetsky scores to put Ukraine within one. Ukraine can’t get another one and Great Britain wins with a final score of three to two. Player of the game was Knaggs for Great Britain and Zhovnier for Ukraine. With this win, Great Britain is done with the tournament and finishes with two wins, one overtime win, and one loss. Great Britain was the surprise of the tournament as most newly promoted teams just hope to stay in the division let alone medal. This Great Britain team proved it belongs in the top division beating Slovenia, France, and Ukraine. Great Britain will either take home the bronze or silver depending on the result of France vs Poland game on Friday. Ukraine has one more game left versus last place Slovenia on Friday. The good news for Ukraine is they definitely have a great goalie in their program with Dyachenko.

The second game of the day. Struggling Slovenia vs group leader Poland. After a scoreless first, Sikora and Skrodziuk would score in the first three minutes of the second, to give Poland a two-goal lead. In the third, Zajc takes his second penalty of a game. This time Poland makes him pay as Horzelski scores on the powerplay. Poland wins with a final score of the three to none. With this win, Poland is only an inch away from winning goal and advancing to WJC division 1 A. For Slovenia this is another loss in what has been a disappointing tournament where they have only one point. Their final game is Friday versus fourth-place Ukraine. Player of the game is Cepon for Slovenia and Jaskiewicz for Poland.
