Last week was so slow that I thought the offseason was coming to a close. Instead, this week was packed with significant signings across the THL and for a few players abroad. KH Torun, STS Sanok, and Unia Oswiecim added major imports to strengthen their squads, while Zygmunt will officially stay in Czechia.
Cracovia Krakow
- No moves this week.
GKS Katowice
- Defensive Defenseman Albin Runesson is Katowice’s newest defender. He has played with Östersunds IK over the past four years, appearing in the HockeyEttan and HockeyAllsvenskan. The 28-year-old had also played in 28 SHL games with MODO Hockey. The move likely completes their defense as Katowice aims to return to the finals for a fourth straight year.
GKS Tychy
- No moves this week.
JKH GKS Jastrzebie
- Going from Cracovia to Jastrzebie will be Czech defenseman Vratislav Kunst. The 25-year-old came up in the Bili Tygri Liberec system and would play 15 Extraliga games for his home club. He has spent most of his professional career in the Chance Liga but played his first season abroad last year in Poland. Kunst had one goal and five assists in 46 games with Cracovia in 2024.
KH Torun
- A familiar face is back, as Anton Svensson has returned to Torun. The Swedish netminder made a significant impact during the 2021 season, posting six shutouts in the first three months of the year. His .922 SV% was third among all goalies in the THL during the regular season. Since leaving Torun, the 35-year-old played in the Swedish second league with IF Troja-Ljungby, as well as in the EIHL and HockeyEttan.
- Torun has added their first Japanese player in club history, Kazuki Lawlor. Lawlor is only the fourth Japanese player in league history. The Osaka native represented Japan at the Division 1 Group A World Championship, scoring a goal and assisting on one. The defender had a great club year in the Asia League with the Tohoku Free Blades, posting 21 points (9G-12A-21PTS) in only 30 games.
- Veteran Swede Mikael Johansson will also be lacing up in Torun this year. The 6’3 forward has appeared at the top three levels of Sweden while also playing all around Europe. Johansson has appeared in Austria, Denmark, Italy, and Scotland, and will now add Poland to the list. Last year, he split his time between the Alps Hockey League and Denmark. In the Alps, he was a prolific producer with 40 points (12G-28-40PTS) in 27 games, but in Denmark, he only picked up three assists in 12 games.
Podhale Nowy Targ
- No moves this week.
STS Sanok
- In the club’s biggest re-signing, Dominik Salama is back with Sanok. Sanok first found the 27-year-old goalie out of the third level of Finnish late in the 2022 season and immediately became a star in the Sanok crease. He served as the starting goalie in 2023, posting a .924 SV%. Last season, Sanok went in a different direction to start the year, but he and the club reunited in November. Salama would depart Sanok late in the season once the club was eliminated. He would sign with the Fife Flyers, playing in five games.
- Lauri Huhdanpää is back in Poland for a fifth year and a second time with Sanok. The 29-year-old played in the Finnish second league from 2017 to 2021 before making his first jump to Poland. He has played for KH Torun, JKH GKS Jastrzebie, Podhale Nowy Targ, and STS Sanok during his time in Poland. During parts of four seasons, he has 48 points (19G-29A-48PTS) in 74 games. Huhdanpää was a leader on Sanok in 2024 with 16 points (9G-7A-16PTS) in 19 games before transferring to Roki in the Mestis after Sanok was eliminated.
- Canadian center David Thomson is joining Sanok. The 26-year-old played his junior hockey in the NAHL and OJHL before playing college hockey in Canada. He was named the USports (OUA West) Most Valuable Player during the 2020 season. Since leaving college, he has appeared in the ECHL, HockeyEttan, and SPHL.
- It was not just offensive additions as the club added Swedish defender Jonathan Karlsson. Karlsson has played almost his entire professional career in the HockeyEttan. The 28-year-old defender achieved a career-high in points last year with 11 (5G-6A-11PTS) in 32 games. This will be only his second year abroad; he previously played in the States with the Idaho Jr. Steelheads.
- Young goalie Filip Świderski is staying with Sanok. The 23-year-old appeared in 16 games last year, putting up a .870 SV%. He has gotten in games with Sanok over the past two seasons as the backup but got the most action of his career this past year after Sanok swapped starters midseason.
Unia Oswiecim
- One of the best forwards of the 2024 season is back in Oswiecim. Daniel Olsson Trkulja has re-upped after posting 55 points (26G-29A-55PTS) in 53 games. His 55 points were second among all players in the THL and helped the team win their first championship since 2004. Before coming to Poland, he played in Norway and Denmark, as well as in the SHL for Linköping HC and Leksands IF.
- As the club prepares to try and repeat as champs, they have added an interesting import in Anton Holm. The 34-year-old has spent most of his career in the HockeyAllsvenskan but also appeared in the HockeyEttan, Liiga, and SHL. He most recently spent the last two years in Norway with Frisk Asker. In 2017, Anders Gozzi described the Swedish forward as ” a good skater and natural goal scorer with a fine shot.
Zaglebie Sosnowiec
- No moves this week.
Polish Players Abroad
- Paweł Zygmunt will return to HC Litvínov for a sixth season. The national team forward has played in the top Czech league since 2020. He scored four goals and assisted on one in 50 games last season. The 6’3 power forward plays mostly a low-minute checking role during the club year. He is a crucial member of the Polish national team, recording 11 points (3G-8A-11PTS) over the past three World Championships.
- Polish Canadian goalie Michał Łuba will switch squads to Dunkerque in the French second league. Łuba has dominated the French second league and was named to the coach’s all-star team for a second straight season. He also helped Nantes to a championship after posting a .946 SV% in the regular season. The Montreal native played for Cracovia Krakow from 2016 to 2019 and was the starting goalie for Poland U20 at the 2015 Division 1 Group B U20 tournament.
