The growth of hockey in Poland continues! There is no better sign of that than more fans in the stands. The European Alliance of Hockey Clubs released their annual attendance report about European and Asian hockey leagues. The Tauron Hockey League now sits in 13th place, up two spots from the 2023 ranking. The alliance reported that THL attendance was up to 1,218, an increase of 39.84%. The only league that experienced a larger growth in attendance this year was Finland’s second league, the Mestis, with a 54.4% increase.
A big reason for the increase in Polish attendance is the growth of Zaglebie Sosnowiec. They greatly upped their hockey marketing effort in their first year independent of the sporting club. Fans responded and packed the seats this year even as the team only managed an eighth-place finish in the regular season standings. Sosnowiec was the top-ranked club in the report for Poland, coming in at 188th with an average attendance of 1,836. They were the only Polish club in the top 200 after being ranked 289th last year. Full ranks of THL clubs and attendance
| Club | Attendance | EHC Rank |
|---|---|---|
| Sosnowiec | 1,836 | 188 |
| Oswiecim | 1,584 | 207 |
| Tychy | 1,569 | 209 |
| Toruń | 1,162 | 247 |
| Katowice | 1,130 | 251 |
| Sanok | 1,125 | 252 |
| Podhale | 1,111 | 254 |
| Cracovia | 859 | 286 |
| Jastrzebie | 586 | 314 |
It was great to see all the fans in the stands this past season. Only two clubs finished with under 1,100 in attendance! The increase from 13th to 15th in the EHC League rankings sees Poland pass the Asia League and Belarus’ Extraliga. It will likely be a while before we see another jump for the THL as the league ranked 12th, Denmark’s Metal Ligaen, had an average of 1,812 fans.
