Playoff action is in full swing worldwide, and four Polish skaters have finished their season with some hardware. Agata Kosińska, Ewelina Czarnecka, Maja Brzezińska, and Martyna Sass all represented Popradske Lisky in the Slovenská ženská hokejová liga, the top level of women’s hockey in Slovakia. In the best-of-five series, they fell to ZHK Sarisanka Presov three games to none. This is the second straight season that Popradske Lisky finished second in the league and lost in the finals.
Many of the Poles did not appear for a full season as they were with Poland’s EWHL club, Silesian Metropolis. Agata Kosińska appeared in four games during the regular season, posting a .955 SV%. The veteran goalie also appeared in relief in one playoff game. In her fourth year with the club, Ewelina Czarnecka recorded four goals and one assist in seven games this year. In eight games, 18-year-old Maja Brzezińska debuted for Popradske Lisky with 13 points (7G-6A-13PTS). Star national team goalie Martyna Sass played in a fifth season with the club. She started seven playoff games, posting a .910 save percentage.
It’s not surprising that so many Poles were on the roster, as former Polish national team head coach Ivan Bednar leads Popradske Lisky now and has since 2022. He was also an assistant coach for the club before taking on the Polish national team job in 2015.
